Garden covered in flying insect

Hiya,
At present in my garden are flying / hovering above the grass are green & black headed like beetles with a brown body. My entire grass is them hovering in them .... Does anyone know

What they are ?

Where they have suddenly appeared from ?

Why so many ?

Will they disappear as quickly as they came ?
Why they came ?

Even the cat is sat looking at them ... Any advice please ? Thanks don't know how to upload a photo advise me and I will

    If so, it's a may bug (I'm not allowed to type their other common name due to the swear filters - Melolontha melolontha)

    I think it's mating season - they should move on as quickly as they appeared.
    That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

    Is it metallic like the one you posted, or more like this?

    If you do think it's the popillia japonica (japanese beetle), you should report it to DEFRA as they're being monitored as a harmful organism.

    I doubt it is though, as no cases have been reported in the UK as yet.
